The Drawings By Sandro Botticelli for Dante's Divine Comedy Book
Old library book, dust jacket in excellent condition, pages very slightly tanned due to ageing but in good condition
"During the years when he was at the height of his powers, and before he was called to Rome to work on the Sistine Chapel, Botticelli began a series of drawings illustrating the Divine Comedy under a commission from Lorenzino de' Medici for whom he had painted the the Primavera and the Birth of Venus...
Not since 1887 has the complete series been published in a book, reproduced from the originals. Furthermore, this edition follows Botticelli's intention in that each drawing faces an excerpt of that part of Dante's canto which it illustrates; each excerpt is accompanied by a brief commentary linking the action and the personages of the Divine Comedy with Botticelli's picture of the scene. The drawings have been reproduced by sophisticated printing techniques, so that the nuances of Botticelli's genius are clear."
With 93 plates in photogravure, 5 in colour and 20 illustrations in the text
